Understanding ASD starts with early intervention

Navigating the ASD world can feel like a maze. It can be hard to understand the diagnosis in your own children.

According to the CDC, ASD is on the rise in the United States, with one in 44 children being diagnosed in 2022. This makes specialized education a necessity.

A tailored approach early on is crucial in helping children with ASD function and succeed as they continue their education and even enter their future careers. But finding the right program for your child can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we’re in the process of creating Tulsa’s best in class facility for ASD, Ellison Development Center, a local resource center for parents, community and most importantly, children, to assist in the early development and education of those with ASD.

Wanting to know more about how ASD works? See below to learn about ASD symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and progression.

What is Autism?

Autism is a developmental disorder of varying severity that impacts someone’s ability to perceive and socialize with others and can lead to communication problems. It can also be characterized by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought or behavior.

Early Signs

Early signs of ASD can vary, but look for indicators like sensory sensitivities, repeated body movements, lack of eye contact and intense interest in certain activities. Please seek the attention of a medical professional for an official diagnosis.

Diagnosis

Medical professionals typically use a variety of developmental monitoring and screening methods and behavioral examinations to make a diagnosis of ASD. A diagnosis can be made as early as 18 months.

Treatment

Treatment for ASD varies on a case-by-case basis. There is no singular treatment for this disorder, though many professionals agree that early intervention with ABA, occupational, speech and physical therapies can be helpful for most individuals.

Progression

Symptoms of ASD can change, but the underlying disorder is not one that worsens over time. With proper therapy and treatment, symptoms can improve with age, especially if started early in life.
